THE PLATFORM OF THE LANCASTER COUNTY REPUBLICAN PARTY
Adopted - June 2014
The Lancaster County Republican Party dedicates itself to the principles of freedom and democracy that have made the United States of America a beacon to the world. We believe in limited government, individual freedom, and personal responsibility. We believe elected and appointed government officials should be required to conduct the people’s business with honesty and integrity. We further believe that our representative democracy will serve the people best when elected officials are credited with, and held accountable for, their actions. The best government is achieved when the electorate is well informed and actively participates in the voting process. We wholeheartedly endorse our State motto: “The Salvation of the State is Watchfulness in the Citizen,.” and the statement that appears above the bench in the Nebraska Supreme Courtroom: “Eyes and ears are poor witnesses when the soul is barbarous.”
Accordingly, we adopt the following common objectives:
I. FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY
We support sound, constitutional public expenditures, including sustainable, balanced budgets based upon a reduction in government expenditures and a plan for decreasing current debt. We believe a responsible government recognizes that citizens are entitled to keep the money they earn as the surest path to savings, investment, a flourishing economy and encouragement of growth and development. We believe these principles should be foremost in any consideration of taxation.
II. SANCTITY OF LIFE
We acknowledge and respect the sanctity of every human life. We oppose abortion. We urge greater commitment, individually and collectively, to meet the needs of women and families in order to provide alternatives to abortion. We support a ban on all human cloning. We do not support research on human embryos destroyed after August 9, 2001 (as established under the policy of President George W. Bush). We support all forms of adult stem cell research. We believe that euthanasia and assisted suicide should remain illegal.
III. RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS
We uphold the constitutional right to bear arms as a cornerstone of national liberty and individual freedom. We recognize the fundamental right of law-abiding citizens to carry arms as a means of self-defense.
We affirm our belief that our democratic society cannot survive and flourish without a populace that is well educated. We affirm that it is the necessary and proper role of the schools to teach patriotism and American exceptionalism. We affirm that genuine accountability and high standards are the keys to quality government operated public schools. We accept multiple possible taxpayer supported models of education. We support home and private schooling. These and other alternative systems provide parents with a genuine choice about how their children are educated and provide healthy competition to the public schools.
V. EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY
We subscribe to equality of opportunity as a bedrock principle of our state and nation, without which individual freedom cannot flourish and our country cannot prosper. We are opposed to government-sponsored affirmative action, preference, or quota programs.
We believe that civilized society requires a strong stand against crime. The rights of the victim and of society at large have too often been overlooked or subordinated to the rights of the criminal. Trials, sentencing and punishment must be fair, swift and just in order to effectively deter crime and hold the criminal properly accountable. Full restitution to crime victims, whenever possible, should be part of the punishment imposed as an acknowledgment of guilt and initiation of rehabilitation. We support capital punishment in those heinous cases where it is warranted. We support post-conviction reform to expedite appeals, consistent with due process.
VII. SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE AND FAMILY
We affirm that marriage between one man and one woman is fundamental to the stability of the family unit upon which all society is built. As such, we oppose same-sex marriages.
VIII. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
We support economic policies that strengthen free markets as an engine of growth and security in our economy. We believe the economic freedom to succeed or fail is the best way to grow jobs and our economic base. We reject the further centralization of our government and strongly oppose the socialization or nationalization of private sector economic. We support the equality of economic opportunity and reject the guarantee of equality of results. Individuals, free to pursue their economic dreams in a free market, will create the most economic gain and produce a strong economy. We support the repeal of the Affordable Care Act and its replacement with rational market based solutions.
IX.HOMELAND SECURITY AND IMMIGRATION
We believe that the primary purpose of government is to provide for the safety and security of its citizens. We support efforts to defend the United States, Nebraska, and Lancaster County from acts of terrorism and we support the allocation of resources to fund this priority. We urgently call upon our federal leaders to secure our national borders recognizing that a nation without enforceable borders is neither sovereign nor secure. We affirm that orderly immigration is essential for our nation to continue to flourish. We are, must be, and should be, a nation of laws. Immigrants must be required to enter and reside in our country lawfully. Providing public benefits to those who are not lawfully present in the United States conflicts with the goal of border security and burdens public resources. Immigration must be orderly so that new immigrants can become Americans. English is the common language of the United States. Government must encourage and require immigrants to learn English.
X. COMMITMENT TO THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
We remain steadfastly committed to the Pledge of Allegiance to of our Nation and expressly endorse the fact that it confirms our allegiance to “one Nation under God.”
XI. FREEDOM OF THOUGHT AND RELIGION
We support the Constitution of the State of Nebraska. We support the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights. We are opposed to the misinterpretation and intentional misuse of the First Amendment to restrict rather than protect religious expression, speech, and the right of the people to peaceably assemble and to petition their government
